Character Analysis: Montresor’s Revenge

Some people will go to great lengths for revenge. Sometimes it’s justified but other times it goes too far. In “The Cask of Amontillado”, by Edgar Allan Poe, the protagonist schemes to kill a man who insulted him. Throughout the story, he shows himself as being vengeful, insane and clever. His revenge shows what could happen if somebody became consumed by vengeance.

One trait Montresor expresses most is vengence. He planned to kill Fortunado for merely insulting him. His family motto is “Nemo me impune lacessit“, which means ”nobody attacks me without punishment”, which means he’s naturally vengeful. In fact, if he wasn’t so vengeful, he wouldn’t have gone so far and killed Fortunado.

Another trait Montresor shows is insanity. When he’s walling Fortunado up in his prison, he stops working to hear him cry and and mock him. He also smiled at the thought of killing him. “My smile now was at the thought of his immolation.”. If Montresor wasn’t insane, he wouldn’t have killed him, just as if he wasn’t vengeful.

Montresor is clever because of the way he killed Fortunado. He fooled him into going with him by saying he shouldn’t go because he’s sick, but knows that he will still go on any way. “‘Come,’ I said, with decision, ‘we will go back; your health is precious… you will be ill, and I cannot be responsible.’” He carries around a trowel under his robes and shows it to Fortunado, who steps back afraid. And as they’re underground, Montresor gives him wine to get his cough away, but it actually makes him drunk.

Montresor’s vengeance, insanity and cleverness are the main traits of his characer. If he didn’t have these traits, he wouldn’t have killed or thought about killing Fortunado. Overall, Montresor is insane and driven by revenge, which makes him the character.

Hephaestus

Hephaestus is the Greek god of fire, black smith and volcanoes. He was the child of Hera, and only Hera. hephaestus was, “parthenogenetic, meaning he was conceived without male fertilization.” When he was born, he was weak and either Zeus or Hera threw him off of Mount Olympus. He fell for an entire day and night, then landed on the island of Lemnos. There, he started to forge under the volcano. To get revenge, he made a chair that trapped Hera. Dionysus gave Hephaestus wine, and when he was drunk, he took him to Mount Olympus to release Hera.

His wife was Aphrodite, but Hephaestus was convinced she cheated on him. He made a net, and surprised her and Ares together. He brought them tied up in the net to Mount Olympus, expecting them to be punished, but the gods just let them go. Since Hephaestus is the god of black smith, he makes the gods all sorts of weapons and tools. He even helped create the first woman, Pandora. Hephaestus is similar to the Roman god, Vulcan, who is also the god of fire. Volcano was named for Vulcan, showing how similar the two gods are. Hephaestus isn’t really recognized as much as the other Greek gods, and so not many things are named after him.
